USC should've lost this game. They didn't.

USC 42, Rutgers 35 in Piscataway. Rutgers walked out of that game 0-3 and USC walked out at 3-0. The stat sheet says one thing and the scoreboard says another. Both are technically correct. Only one of them travels.

Rutgers came into this game 0-2 with losses to UMass and Boston College. UMass. Boston College. Those are the sentences Rutgers fans have been trying to forget for two weeks. Then their team went out and hung 460 yards of offense on a USC defense that everybody has been pretending is fine.

The scoreboard lies sometimes.

USC forced two turnovers, including a 99-yard pick-six that changed the whole complexion of the game. Take away those two possessions and Rutgers wins by two touchdowns. That is not hyperbole. That is math. USC's defense gave up 6.4 yards per play and stayed on the field for 34 minutes of possession. That is a season-ending stat line if it holds up against real Big Ten competition.

Lincoln Riley is going to spend Monday morning telling us this was a resilient road win. It was not a resilient road win. It was a game USC should have lost to a team that has been the punch line of the Big Ten East. Riley is going to say the right things at the podium and then he is going to go into that film room with his defensive coordinator and have a very different conversation.

HARD HAT AND LUNCH PAIL FOR RUTGERS. Greg Schiano's guys are 0-3 and playing the best football of any 0-3 team in the country. That does not usually happen. The Scarlet Knights lost this game and left Piscataway with more national respect than they walked in with. That is a weird moment.

What this means

USC is a fraud until the defense proves otherwise. Big Ten defenses do not give up 460 yards to Rutgers. Not to Rutgers. Not in September. The Trojans are 3-0 and there is a real chance they walk into a road game against Michigan or Ohio State in October and get run out of the building.

The bigger question about USC's move to the Big Ten was always whether the roster and the culture could handle midwest football. So far the answer is not encouraging. Big Ten teams are physical. They run the ball. They eat clock. Rutgers is one of the worst Big Ten teams and they still ran their scheme against USC for four quarters.

What's next

USC's schedule the rest of the way is a gauntlet. Lincoln Riley has to figure out how to fix a defense on a bye week if he gets one, and he probably will not. The Trojans do not get to hide much longer. Every game from here is a Big Ten defense test.

Rutgers gets Iowa next. Schiano's guys are not going to win that game but they are going to make Iowa work for it. This is the version of Rutgers that Schiano was hired to build. If they can turn this into 6-6 by December, that is a program-changing season for a program that has forgotten what program-changing means.
